All frequent traveler painfully knows that at some point you have to upgrade and update your travel gear every now and then.
Work horse update
For me I happily used a Microsoft Surface Go2-m3 for some years and it did the job pretty well, but with lately switching all recorded videos to 4K resolution and therefore needing more processing power aswell as memory, I finally had to make the switch and upgrade to a faster device. I already was so amazed and satisfied by my previous Microsoft Surface Go 2, that it was clear I would stick to this series and then decided to get the current high end version, which is the Microsoft Surface 8 Pro with a i7 processor, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD.
Using this one for around two weeks already and setting up everything I have to say, that I’m already really satisfied. Even though it is much larger, the extra bonus in terms of space and resolution concerning the display is awesome to work with. Cutting 4K videos is now also more convenient, even though you still have to make some compromises to be highly mobile.
Some people asked my why I don’t switch to an Apple laptop and the answer is easy: They just don’t go anywhere near the flexibility of a Surface device. No touchscreen. No convertible option for flying.
And unfortunately as someone who uses both (MacBook Pro and Windows devices, aswell as Android and iPhones) in business life: Windows in connection with an Android device is now much more flexible, less crippled in functions and more versatile in general. And using an iPad would make it just even worse, because the iPad just tries to mimic a convertible. Overall it still is just a tablet with an OS that’s far from an ordinary full featured laptop operating system.
The new eagle has landed
Another upgrade wasn’t that necessary, but after the Maldives trip I identified one major thing that I absolutely wanted.
Event though my DJI Mini 2 did an excellent job at the Maldives I often had a hard time starting, as the rain season already started and the constant winds were often too much to deal for the Mini 2. So I wished for a drone that still was under the magical 250g of weight, but still was a little bit more resistant to wind.
With being perfectly fine with DJI’s drones for many years, going from the original DJI Mini to the Mini 2, I decided to make the pricey upgrade to the DJI Mini 3 Pro with the new DJI RC.
But the better resistance to wind is not the only thing that tempted me!
Having surrounding sensors, the new Mini version now also allows full active tracking and following, which is awesome for hiking in lonely areas or being on a boat. So many possibilities.
Another big thing for me is the possibility to switch the camera to 9:16 orientation as it is used on Instagram and other mobile platforms. By now I had to heavily crop the videos which meant to loose a lot of resolution and details.
The Mini 3 Pro now feels much more professional and gives me more artistical freedom, which is awesome!
Another huge improvement for me is the new DJI RC which allows much faster starting and the display is so much better in sunny surroundings than the previously used smartphone. Also it saves the precious battery time of my smartphone.
So, to sum up these upgrades:
Harry is happy! 😀
